My name is Patrick Martin. I am a Professional Pre-Planning Advisor and Funeral Arranger (based in Southern California) for the largest chain of Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation providers in America.

My hope is that my story inspires you to act - because we just don’t know what tomorrow may bring.

In 2008 I was laid off from a 22-year career in retail sales and management.
Like millions of Americans, I suddenly found myself financially vulnerable to a degree I never imagined.

Two months later, while at a job fair, I heard a presentation about Funeral Pre-Planning and Arranging.

I got a strong sense that this was the direction for me. That sense was later confirmed by the events
that followed.

Armed with nothing more than a work history in another field and a willingness to learn, I applied for the position of Pre-Planning Advisor not having ever planned a funeral before.

About a week later, before I got the call for the interview, I got a call from my mother telling me my Grandmother just passed away.

I went from worried to terrified. I was already deeply concerned about the survival of my wife and son. Now I’m going to be asked for thousands of dollars, I don’t have to spare, to help with a funeral. All I could think of was, “NOT NOW! I NEED THAT MONEY”. All of this was under the cloud of knowing that I will never see my grandmother, on earth, again. It was just too much.

One of the most disgusting feelings I've experienced was being a 44 year old, accomplished, adult caught so unprepared for all of this. Trying to recall fond memories of "Nany", we called her, and all I could think of was the money and that I'm probably going to mess this up because I've never been through this before and I don't know what I'm doing.

"This was not some news story I was watching on TV. This was actually happening to me.

This kind-of stuff happens to "OTHER PEOPLE" not me!!!"

You can imagine how relieved I was to discover that my mother had pre-planned everything for my grandmother and herself years before and had just paid everything off. When my mother handed me the Funeral Planning Guide from her mortuary with the contracts in the back and all paid off...
I told her, “This is the job I just applied for!!!”

THAT SELFLESS, MATURE AND COURAGEOUS ACT SAVED MY FAMILY!

We entered the mortuary still a little skeptical that there would be some huge, hidden costs somewhere in the process – but there wasn’t.

I was amazed to see the entire funeral arrangement go smoothly.

Only the cost of Death Certificates, tax and the state required Burial Permit was needed.

On December 6th, 2023 my mother passed away after a long battle with dementia. Living a humble and dignified life, she was always one to handle her personal affairs.

I thank God that she did so before she lost the ability to do so.

The thought that keeps my heart warm every day is knowing not just how my mother lived but how she left this world – with all of her affairs handled. It truly is the last thing your family will remember about you.
